Factors Affecting Mesothelioma Treatment Options

The best options for treating Mesothelioma Cancer vary depending on the individual. Depending on disease contributing factors such as:

  • Where the Mesothelioma Cancer is located?
  • What stage is the Mesothelioma Cancer (I-IV)?
  • How far and wide has the Mesothelioma Cancer spread?
  • What do the Mesothelium Cancer cells look like under a microscope (biopsy required)?
  • What is the patient's age?
  • Other considerations made by the patient, the patient's family, and the doctors involved in his or her care.

Time is of the Essence

Unfortunately, treatment of Mesothelioma Cancer has not proven very successful and patients have an average survival time of six to twelve months after symptoms develop. Mortality rates at leading Cancer Centers around the world often have better statistics. If the Mesothelioma disease is caught early enough, the survival rates go up significantly and can exceed five years. Therefore a pro-active approach if you think you have been exposed to Asbestos and are at risk for developing Mesothelioma is crucial.

Traditional Cancer Care

Treatment of Mesothelioma Cancer tradionally is handled the same way treatment of other forms of Cancer are handled. Often these traditional Cancer regiments are combined with one another to offer the best possible prognosis. The three leading kinds of tradional treatment for Mesothelioma Cancer are:

  • Surgery - (Surgical removal of the Cancer cells by a skilled surgeron)
  • Chemotherapy - (Chemical Treatment in the form of powerful and toxic drugs to destroy the Cancer cells)
  • Radiotherapy - (aka Radiation Therapy - using powerful, targetted blasts of electromagnetic energy usually X-Rays, but more recently Gamma rays have also been used successfully to destroy the Cancerous lesions)
